- Well 9600bps modems *do* encode mutliple bits per symbol, typically 4 using
- a 2400 baud carrier, even V.22 encodes 2 bits per symbol on a 600 baud
- carrier. PEP encodes a massive number of bits per symbol.
-
- For the lines at the time 9600bps may well have been a reasonable estimate
- for maximum data rate. Things have improved since then but with the
- introduction of digital exchanges things are much more clear cut - you have
- a 64Kbps channel and that's it - there's simply no possibility of going
- faster with a raw data rate without upping the speed of that digital channel.
-
- The local loop can potentially sustain a much faster speed with suitable
- equipment at each end, which is what the subject of this thread is
- about, but not with normal POTS equipment (simple ISDN2 carries
- something like 140kbps over a local loop). This Ericsson 'modem' might,
- for example, form the basis of a higher speed replacement to ISDN2.
